Carrathool Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC)

Council is the co-ordinator and provides support for the Carrathool Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC). The LEMC is comprised of representatives of the NSW Police, NSW State Emergency Service, NSW Fire & Rescue, NSW Rural Fire Service, NSW Ambulance Service, NSW Health and NSW Department of Primary Industries.

The Committee is active and has completed a series of emergency risk management projects in recent years including developing strategies for Neighbourhood Safer Places in the event of bush-fire and a review of the Hillston Aerodrome Emergency Management Plan.

The LEMC is represented at a regional level in District Emergency Management meetings by the Chair of the Committee, Council’s Manager Infrastructure Services.

Emergency Services

State Emergency Service (SES)
NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is the lead response agency for floods, storms and tsunamis across NSW. The SES is a volunteer-based organisation that works with communities to prepare and respond to severe weather events 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

There are two (2) State Emergency Service Units within the Carrathool Shire LGA:

• Hillston SES – The Hillston SES unit is an agency for floods, storms and road crash rescue.
• Goolgowi SES – The Goolgowi SES unit is an agency for floods, storms and road crash rescue. The unit is also one of 12 units within NSW that also have volunteers trained as Community First Responders by the NSW Ambulance Service, these volunteers provide support by assessing patients, providing first aid and early notification to responding paramedics.

Rural Fire Service (RFS)
NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) is the lead combat agency for bush fires in NSW and works closely with other agencies responding to a range of emergencies. The RFS is a volunteer-based organisation that is trained to respond to fire related events 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
